The story

Silvia Webber was a free Black woman in 1830s Texas who helped enslaved people self-emancipate to Mexico. She has been called the Harriet Tubman of Texas, yet few people know her name.

With funding from the Mellon Foundation, we compiled research and interviewed descendants to create a documentary film and an online virtual tour of Webberville, the town named for the Webbers, where visitors can explore the land where Silvia and John Webber lived and helped people reach freedom.
